I don't buy it! IF IFT4 exploded at soft landing, that's a HUGE risk for a catch for IFT5!!! SpaceX isn't going to risk destroying their entire launch facility for a risky catch attempt! Never mind the investigations and delays that would create! IF IFT4 exploded, IFT5 won't be doing a catch attempt. Honestly, I think it's too soon even if there was no explosion for IFT4. The tests done with the catch arms are insufficient for a "test" before trying the real thing coming down from the sky! SapceX isn't ready for a real catch attempt yet and probably won't be by the time IFT5 launches.

I would have been more surprised if had not blown up. Imagine several metric tons of fuel remaining in a rocket. Using the self-destruct would be a reasonable way to terminate the mission.

I wonder how the gimbaling mechanism can sustain going through the lower atmosphere at supersonic speeds. I know that the reverse is true also, during liftoff, this pressure is equal everywhere, but the last 40 seconds of free fall of the booster, slightly sideways, do not create a pressure equally, all the pressure is sideways and the engine bell is NOT aerodynamic stuff… the nose of a Blackbird SR-71 is glowing red at those speeds, imagine a rocket engine bell going the wrong way! Yikes! Even the grid fins of the boosters are shaking like crazy by slightly rotating to correct the trajectory, imagine the engines bells!? Holy shit!

Regarding testing the pressurized space suits, I didn't realize until now that the suit forearm had articulation for wrist rotation. Wow, that seems like a risky joint! Seems like this would be a great use for human-shaped robots... put them in suits in an evacuated chamber, have them run through the expected range of motions, and there's no one killed if the suit fails. Just ignore the fact that the bot will weight immensely more than a human.

The onboard camera view showed the booster falling over after splashdown. The subsequent explosion was probably caused by the FTS and was intentional.

These are test flights last time I heard. Practice makes perfect.

They cut away rapidly after the test maneuvers above the water. They probably expected an RUD (steam or methane explosion) and wanted to damp down chatter like this. They should have advertised the end of the flight as "test landing, then planned explosion, watch THIS!" SpaceX presents such a bizarre mix of openness and secrecy.

If it did blew up, it could be the detonation signal that did it? Could that not be a reason? I think it should land on Feet like the Falcon does.

It appears the explosion being expected has already been covered in the comments. Regarding attempting to catch on the next flight, IF they do it (Elon says if there is any doubt they will divert it out over the water), then they and the FAA will have poured over mountains of data to decide it's time. Like the first launch (which obviously didn't go as planned), at a certain point the only way you can get the data you need is to send it and get the data (successful or unsuccessful). They are clearly satisfied with their safety protocols and are ready to try. It is also worth mentioning that they are already producing version 2 hardware, and Elon has said there are thousands of changes even between version 1 articles. They are also moving along rapidly with the construction of the second tower which also has numerous upgrades. I'm thinking the math might be "hey if we damage the tower, we can take a little extra time, make design changes from the data we gathered and then upgrade tower one in the repair process". It might mean a 4 or 5 month delay but could result in an acceleration in overall program goals. One thing we know for sure is this is not a "knee jerk" decision, yes Elon can be impulsive, but with all that is involved in this, it's way more than just him saying "okay lets do it".

AA, don’t apologize for doing a critical review. It’s true that RUclips watchers are fans so it is difficult to maintain viewership when some ( most ?) of the audience doesn’t want a factual opinion.

An engine blew as it was about 1,000 meters from the water. That is where the orange flames are coming from as it hits the water. You can clearly see pieces of something fly by the rocket as it is coming down. And you can see the liquid methane burning right before it hits the water. That is coming out of the ripped piping where the engine was. The flame is yellow/orange, just like your stove burner if it isn't getting enough oxygen to burn the methane correctly. (You don't want that, since you are making deadly carbon monoxide, instead of carbon dioxide and water vapor.) Watch the video over and over, and you will see the rocket on fire way before it hits the Gulf of Mexico. That was a mishap - an engine failure before it touched down. You can't believe video which didn't come from SpaceX. It is too easy to fake now.

IF: Landed softly and after tipping over hit the water like a literal building and exploded: Try the catch "Landed softly" but then RUD: Iterate more before trying.

Hello, it was not a catch. It flipped on its side after touching the ocean. I 5:40 would not be surprised it it exploded.

Once it performs a soft touch down in the unlikely event it does not explode when a 70m steel hollow tube fell on its side it wont sink so of course they detonated the fts system to ensure it sank, come on Angry use a little critical thinking.

Maybe it is a real photo. But, with the deluge of fake photos produced these days, why not ask the FAA BEFORE you tell the world you're pretty sure it's real. God forbid we try to fact check before spreading possible misinformation.

I don't like that much negativity. It was an awesome flight with many highlights, like the successful launch, showing that Starship has engine out capabilities, successful hot staging, successful boost back burn, successful reentry of Super Heavy, successful landing burn and landing, successful fight of Starship itself, successful use of attitude control in contrast to flight 3, successful reentry of Starship itself even if the flap melted and successful landing burn of Starship. Why don't you make a video about one of those? No, you speculate about a possible explosion after tipping over and the bad intentions SpaceX might have to not show that 🙈

I've been editing images for 28 years and that image looks fake to me, there seems to be no water movement from the explosion shock wave. And the light cast on the water is not right it would not be direct!
